Jesus has a Kryptonite.

By jeffbell

Faster than a speeding bullet?  check.

More powerful than a locomotive? check.

Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? check.

Kryptonite? Not a chance.

What?

You know the story.  The unstoppable Superman is stopped dead in his tracks – every time – by Kryptonite.  The guy can bend steal and stop a rocket, but a little six year old girl brings Kryptonite to the party – and it’s lights out.  He’s powerless.

Makes no sense.  Until I read Mark 6.

One of the more fascinating (and troubling) passages in the Bible for me is the sixth chapter of Mark.  By any standard, Jesus is coming off of a pretty impressive run:  some powerful teaching; telling a storm to calm down (and it does!); casting out demons; raising a dead girl.  Big stuff.  Superman stuff.  Then, as chapter 6 begins and Jesus is engaging with a crowd, we’re told this:

He could not do any miracles there…”

What?

My belief system is one that sees God as all powerful.  The Bible teaches that God is limitless, uncontainable, unstoppable.  I believe that – I teach that.  Yet it’s clear from this passage that Jesus actually has something that prevents Him from being who He is and doing what He does.  Something that even His power can’t overcome.

Jesus has a Kryptonite.

The troubling thing?

It’s us.

“…and He was amazed at their lack of faith.”

It’s incredible to me that the One who can do all things and has created all things can actually be stopped by a lack of faith in the ones He created.

Jesus has a Kryptonite – and it’s me.  My lack of faith.  My lack of dependency.  My lack of worship.   My lack of obedience.  They all have the ability to limit a limitless God.
